Sea Pines Resort: History

At the end of the 1940s, a group of Georgia lumber associatesóGeneral Joseph Fraser, Fred Hack, Olin McIntosh, and C.C. Stebbinsóformed The Hilton Head Company, through which they intended to harvest their 19,000 acres of land on the Islandís southern tip. The Hilton Head Company is responsible for envisioning and developing a number of the 11 plantation communities on Hilton Head. In 1956, Gen. Fraserís son Charles purchased his dadís share of the land and masterminded a brilliant resort community he would name Sea Pines Plantation and its now-famous Harbour Town. Charles, along with his father and brother, formed the Sea Pines Company within a year. Fraserís Sea Pines Plantation was intended only for oceanfront and ocean-oriented lots, but when architect Stewart Dawson explained an idea of homes nestled along rows near the ocean, Fraser agreed and the first lot deed was signed in 1958. Because of a series of financial instabilities, the community was sold, bought, and resold multiple times before finally landing in bankruptcy, at which time the presiding judge appointed two associations in charge of maintaining it. Sea Pines Associates and Community Service Associates held on to Sea Pines Plantation until 2005, when it came to rest in the hands of The Riverstone Group, who then officially renamed it The Sea Pines Resort. Sea Pinesí founder has become a legend on Hilton Head Island. Although Charles Fraserís life was tragically taken in a boating accident at the end of 2002, his resort masterpiece carries on.
